General:
Mrs. Charles Garrett died Wednesday, Sept. 28, 1977 at 7:30 a.m. at the Oklahoma City Burn Center. She had suffered second and third degree burns in an early morning fire that took the life of her husband in their home in Perryton, TX on Aug. 8, 1977.
She had been taken to the Oklahoma City Hospital the day following the fire, being transfeffed there from High Plains Baptist Hospital in Amarillo. She had first been taken to the Ochiltree General Hospital where her husbanddied within 15 minutes of reaching there from their burning home.
Funeral arrangements for Mrs. Garrett will be held September 30, with Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home in charge of services. Funeral services for both Nelle and Charles were held at the First Methodist Church and burial for them is in the Ochiltree Cemetery, Perryton, TX.
On the morning of the fire, Mrs. Garrett had managed to escape from the burning home by the time fireman arrived. She was reportedly lying in the front yard badly burned, but still conscious and crying out for her husband. Her husband was found lying inside about three feet from the front door of the home.
Mrs. Nelle Garrett was the former Nelle Evelyn Stimmel. Charles and Nelle were married at Liberal, KS on Oct 15, 1929. Both were living in Perryton at the time of their marriage. Charles, a retired farmer, was a member of a pioneer Ochiltree county family, Mr. and Mrs. William Robert Garrett. Nelle had lived at Woodward, OK before coming to Perryton. She had taught school at Woodward and clerked in a store there. She taught in several rural schools before their marriage. Nelle was an active member of the Perryton Methodist Church, also working with the Methodist Women of the Church and the Sorosis Club, currently serving as vice chairman of the Current Events Department. She observed her 76th birthday on July 14, 1977.
Survivors include two brothers anf five sisters, and two sister-in-laws Ida Garrett of Perryton, and Louise and her husband Addison Cutter of Dallas, TX.
She was preceeded in death by her parents Francis Marion and Elnora Patrick, Stimmel of Mutual, OK.
