Notes
General:

The 1860 census of (Cape Vincent Post Office) Lyme, Jefferson Co., NY shows Jacob Snell 11 years old living in the household of Christopher & Jane Fox.
This closely matches data from the 1850 census that has Nancy Snell as head of household in Orleans, Jefferson Co., NY with Jacob being her youngest child at 2 years of age.
It also closely matches a birth record from Orleans, Jefferson Co. for a Jacob N. Snell born 11/11/1847, with parents of Christopher and Nancy.

These dates however conflict with what his descendants believe to be his birth date (5/4/1856). However, his granddaughter (Doris) believed (had since she was a teenager) that he lied about his age or didn't know his true birth date and that he was older than he stated.
Information gleaned from four of his grandchildren is that Jacob didn't know where he was born, had no knowledge of any brothers or sisters and had no memory of his mother (the grandchildren were adamant that she was Nancy Quackenbush) Could the 5/4/1856 date actually be when his mother died or when he went to live with the Fox family?

All other aspects of the family stories; his being raised by the Christopher Fox family, his mother being Nancy Quackenbush, etc. do match.
